Who was Sheikh Edebali
Sheikh
Edebali, whose birth is not exactly known, was born around 1206 CE in Inac,
Turkey. Known for his knowledge and purity, Sheikh Edebali was a Sufi mystic
and a Turkish poet. Sheikh Edebali is also famous with the name Baliseyh. When the
Ottoman Empire was in its establishment phase, Sheikh Edebali played an effective
role in developing policies and shaping its dominion in Sogut, Turkey. At that
time, Sheikh Edebali was much respected and honored in the whole Muslim world as
he was the descendant of Banu Tamim tribe and Al-Khater family. During the
whole growing phase of the Ottoman Empire, he continuously supported first
Ertugrul Ghazi and then his son Osman Ghazi. It has also been reported that
Ertugrul Ghazi and his sons were much surprised while they were at Sheikh
Edebali’s dargah when they saw the compiled version of Holy Quran for the first
time.
As I mentioned
earlier, Ertugrul Ghazi who was the leader of the Kayi Tribe after his father
Suleyman Shah, used to visit Sheikh Edebali oftentimes. During that period,
Sheikh Edebali used to tell Ertugrul Ghazi about Islam and the great
personalities who devoted their lives to Islam. As they were migrants and
facing a lot of problems and hardships, Ertugrul used to take advice from
Sheikh Edebali for the diverse population of Anatolia. After Ertugrul Ghazi,
his son Osman Ghazi also continue following him after meeting him. He started
visiting his dargah. As a result, Sheikh Edebali was called as the spiritual
mentor of Osman Ghazi. Osman Ghazi also loved to visit Sheikh Edebali and to be
in his company.
There isn’t
much information about his married life and spouse but Sheikh Edebali had two
sons named Mahmud Pasha and Mehmed Pasha. Rabia Bala Hatun and Malhun Hatun
were Sheikh Edebali’s daughters. During his visits to Sheikh Edebali’s dargah,
Osman Ghazi saw his daughter Rabia Bala Hatun. After seeing the daughter of
Sheikh Edebali, he attracted towards her and fell in love with her. So, he
started visiting Sheikh Edebali more consistently and regularly. After
falling in love with her, Osman Ghazi encouraged himself and confessed his love
for Rabia Bala Hatun to Sheikh Edebali. But Sheikh Edebali wasn’t agreed at
that time because he was of the opinion that they are of much distant social
statuses. But later what made Sheikh Edebali marry her daughter with Osman
Ghazi?
One Night at Sheikh Edebali’s Dargah
One night,
Osman Ghazi was reciting Holy Quran at Sheikh Edebali’s dargah. It had passed
six hours while reciting as Osman Ghazi went to sleep while thinking about
Rabia Bala Hatun. Osman Ghazi also saw a dream on that night which is much
famous as it was about the establishment of the Ottoman Empire. Osman Ghazi saw
that a crescent of moonlight (symbolizing Rabia Bala Hatun) is coming out of
Sheikh Edebali’s chest and entering into his own. The crescent of moonlight
disappeared later. Later Osman Ghazi saw that a tree started to grow and he was
seeing towards the sky as the tree was not stopping to grow more and more.
Osman Ghazi saw that it grew until it covered the four rivers and four
mountains.
After awakening
in the morning, Osman Ghazi told about his last night’s dream to Sheikh
Edebali. Sheikh Edebali was much surprised and happy for him. Sheikh Edebali revealed
its denotation to Osman Ghazi. Sheikh Edebali explained that he has been
blessed by the ALLAH Almighty as the dream is a good omen for him. Sheikh
Edbali added that this dream was about his power and his honor that will be
given to him in the near future and his sons will rule the whole world. And later,
it came true when Osman Ghazi became founder of the great Islamic Empire which
lasted for the next six centuries and occupied almost three continents of the
world. And out of his descendants, Sultan Mehmed the conqueror took
Constantinople while fulfilling the saying of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى_الله_عليه_وسلم)
and the Ottoman Empire reached its maximum extent.
After this
dream and its denotation, Sheikh Edebali readily agreed for Osman Ghazi to
marry his daughter. In 1289 CE, Sheikh Edebali married his daughter Rabia Bala
Hatun to Osman Ghazi. Sheikh Edebali lived a long life and died in the 120th
year of his age in 1326 CE. Bilecik, Turkey is the burial place of Sheikh
Edebali. Before leaving this temporal world, Sheikh Edebali advised his Son-in-Law
Osman Ghazi with these most famous words;
And ALLAH knows the best.
